Seeing Africa’s Big Five in the wild is one of the most unforgettable experiences a safari can offer. Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino each bring something different to the African wilderness, and East Africa is home to some of the best places to encounter them.

From the open plains of Kenya to the vast wilderness of northern Tanzania, every safari brings the possibility of an extraordinary wildlife encounter.

1. Maasai Mara, Kenya — Lions, Leopards & More

The Maasai Mara is one of Africa’s most iconic safari destinations and an excellent place to search for the Big Five.

Lions are frequently seen across the grasslands, while leopards can be found resting in trees or moving quietly through the savannah. Elephants, buffaloes and rhinos can also be encountered during game drives.

During the Great Migration season, the Mara becomes even more spectacular as huge herds of wildebeest and zebra enter the ecosystem.

2. Serengeti, Tanzania — The Heart of the Wild

The Serengeti is synonymous with African wildlife.

Its endless plains provide exceptional opportunities to see lions, elephants, buffaloes and leopards, while the wider ecosystem is also home to rhinos.

The Serengeti is particularly famous for the Great Migration, when millions of wildebeest and other animals move across the ecosystem in search of fresh grazing and water.

3. Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania — A Wildlife Wonderland

Few places offer such a remarkable concentration of wildlife in such a dramatic setting as the Ngorongoro Crater.

The crater floor provides opportunities to see lions, elephants, buffaloes and, with luck, the endangered black rhino. Its enclosed ecosystem makes it one of the most rewarding places for wildlife viewing in Tanzania.

And beyond the wildlife, the crater itself is an unforgettable sight.

4. Amboseli, Kenya — Elephants Under Kilimanjaro

Amboseli is especially famous for its large elephant herds and spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

While elephants are the stars here, game drives can also reveal lions, buffaloes and other fascinating wildlife. The combination of wildlife and scenery makes Amboseli one of Kenya’s most distinctive safari destinations.

5. Tsavo, Kenya — Wild, Vast & Untamed

Tsavo offers a different kind of safari experience.

Its enormous landscapes, red-earth scenery and diverse wildlife create a feeling of true wilderness. Visitors can encounter elephants, lions, buffaloes and many other species while exploring the park's varied habitats.

Tsavo is ideal for travellers looking to experience a less predictable and deeply wild side of Kenya.

The Big Five Are Only the Beginning

Although the Big Five remain one of the biggest attractions, East Africa offers much more.

Cheetahs racing across the plains, giraffes browsing among acacia trees, hippos gathering in rivers, hyenas moving through the grasslands and thousands of colourful bird species all add to the experience.

The beauty of safari is that you never know exactly what the next game drive will bring.

Your Big Five Adventure Awaits

Whether you dream of watching lions on the Maasai Mara plains, following a leopard in the Serengeti, searching for rhinos in Ngorongoro or watching elephants beneath Mount Kilimanjaro, East Africa offers extraordinary opportunities to experience wildlife in its natural environment.

The Big Five are not simply animals to tick off a list. They are part of a much bigger story — the unforgettable experience of wild Africa.
