The Big Five may be among Africa’s most famous animals, but they are only a small part of what makes an African safari extraordinary.

Across the savannahs, forests and wetlands of East Africa, countless species create a constantly changing wildlife experience. Sometimes, the animals you did not expect to see become the highlights of your journey.

Cheetahs — Masters of the Open Plains

Built for speed, cheetahs are among the most exciting predators to encounter on safari.

Watching one scan the grasslands before suddenly accelerating after its prey is a moment you are unlikely to forget. The open plains of the Maasai Mara and Serengeti provide exceptional settings for these magnificent cats.

Giraffes — Grace Across the Savannah

Few sights are more iconic than a giraffe standing tall against an African sunset.

Their remarkable height allows them to feed from trees that other animals cannot reach, while their gentle movements make them a favourite among safari travellers.

Zebras — The Stripes of the Wild

Zebras bring movement and character to the savannah.

Often seen in large herds alongside wildebeest, they are especially spectacular during the Great Migration, when vast numbers move through the Serengeti and Maasai Mara ecosystem.

 Hippos — Powerful River Dwellers

Spend time near an African river or waterhole and you may hear hippos before you see them.

Although they spend much of their time in water, they are among the most powerful animals in Africa and add a completely different dimension to a safari.

African Wild Dogs — Rare and Remarkable

For wildlife enthusiasts, encountering African wild dogs can be particularly special.

These highly social predators are known for their distinctive coats and coordinated hunting behaviour. They are less commonly encountered than many other safari animals, making a sighting all the more memorable.

 Primates and Forest Wildlife

East Africa also offers incredible opportunities beyond the open savannah.

In Uganda and Rwanda, forest experiences can introduce travellers to chimpanzees, mountain gorillas and other fascinating primates in completely different environments.

Look Up — Africa's Birds Matter Too

Safari is not only about mammals.

From majestic eagles and colourful bee-eaters to flamingos, kingfishers and enormous vultures, East Africa supports an extraordinary variety of birdlife.

For bird lovers and photographers, every game drive can become a completely different adventure.

The Beauty Is in the Unexpected

A safari should never be reduced to a checklist.

The thrill is in discovering what is around the next corner, whether it is a cheetah in the distance, a herd of giraffes crossing the road or a colourful bird perched beside your vehicle.

Africa's wildlife story is much bigger than the Big Five—and that is exactly what makes every safari so special.
